Health

Switzerland is the biggest bilateral donor in the health sectors in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It offers its expertise as a long-term commitment by collaborating with local partners. Swiss-supported projects focus on vulnerable groups, such as people with chronic illnesses, mental health conditions, and with limited mobility, or people living in remote areas.

About focus area

In close collaboration with the health authorities, Switzerland contributes to ensuring access to quality primary healthcare throughout the country and enabling people to adopt a healthier lifestyle. Switzerland's efforts in primary healthcare focus on the prevention of non-communicable diseases, the improvement of nursing services, and the development of care services for the elderly.

This improves the health system’s efficiency and reduces costs. The development of policies, laws, regulations, strategies and professional standards are jointly discussed between both entity ministries and elaborated in a countrywide harmonised manner. Personal and institutional relationships across entities are a contribution to cohesion.

Strengthening Nursing (ProSes)

ProSes aims to strengthen the nursing profession in Bosnia and Herzegovina and to support nurses in the provision of high-quality services, accessible to all, in particular to vulnerable and socially excluded groups of population.

Ageing and Health

The data show that a large part of the retired population in BiH lives on the edge of poverty, which significantly affects their health and quality of life. Older people are a particularly vulnerable group (especially those who live alone without family support) and society needs to make significant efforts to provide them with adequate home care and access to health services.
